Tropical Frozen Piña Colada Cocktail Recipe

When you vacation somewhere with a body of water and sand, the piña colada is one of the most delicious and refreshing cocktails you can have in hand. Everything about this drink screams tropical, from the cream of coconut and pineapple juices down to the blended ice that helps cool you off on a hot day. Truly, it's one of the best "vacation" drinks out there, and even just hearing the name makes us want to kick back in a lounge chair and relax.
Recipe developer Christina Musgrave came up with this tropical recipe that is nothing short of delightful. "I love how easy this cocktail recipe is and that it's made with simple ingredients," Musgrave raves. She also shares why this drink is great to enjoy during any season. "I think a piña colada is great year round. The pineapple and coconut flavor will bring you to warmer temperatures, no matter how warm or cold it is outside! It's also great paired with tropical fish or fruit dishes," Musgrave says.
Gather the ingredients for this tropical frozen piña colada recipe
Most of the ingredients in this recipe are super refreshing. When you head to the store, all you will need to pick up light rum. "Light rum is a personal preference, you can use dark rum," Musgrave notes. To complete the list, get pineapple juice, cream of coconut, lime juice, ice, and of course, a Maraschino cherry for garnish.
Add the ingredients to a blender
Since this recipe calls for a frozen piña colada, you will need a blender to mix it. Open the lid and add the light rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, lime juice, and ice. Place the lid back on the blender and turn it on.
Blend the drink
Continue blending the drink until all the ingredients are mixed, and the ice gets broken down. "It should be icy without being too thin. I used the frozen drink setting on my blender that blended it about 45 seconds," Musgrave shares.
By the way, the flavor is fantastic! "This cocktail tastes fresh and has a balance of coconut and pineapple," Musgrave notes.
Pour into glasses and add garnish
Now, just pour the piña colada into a glass of your choice and top it with a maraschino cherry. "You can add a rum floater on top of the drink or top with a pineapple slice," Musgrave adds.
Serve and enjoy
Now, the only thing left to do is drink up! This drink is almost like a smoothie since it's so thick and wonderful on its own, but Musgrave also shares a few of her favorite foods to pair it with. "I'd pair this with a pineapple salsa, citrusy fish dishes, or chips and guacamole," Musgrave suggests. How refreshing do those combinations sound?
- 2 ounces light rum
- 1 ½ ounces pineapple juice
- 1 ounce cream of coconut
- ½ ounce lime juice
- 1 cup ice
- 1 maraschino cherry, for garnish
- Add the light rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, lime juice, and ice to a blender.
